Today’s location: Starting in a fern-filled forest, the Angels Rest trail climbs uphill for 0.6 mile before reaching the top of Coopey Falls, a 150 to 175 foot horsetail waterfall, and the footbridge crossing the creek. Continuing on, the trail begins to switchback uphill for 1.6 miles before reaching the ridge crest. Turn left at a junction to a spectacular gorge viewpoint. Use extreme caution at the steep cliff edge. Some nice flower features of this hike are the wildflower displays (which peaks in May) of blue-eyed grass, star-flowered Smiliacina, and trillium at lower levels. Also you get a grand view of the Gorge once you reach the top. There is even a bench to rest yourself on that overlooks the entire area.

Today’s location: Laurance is potentially the best fly fishing lake in the Mount Hood region because angling regulations don’t allow the killing of wild fish. Wild Bull Trout, wild rainbows and wild cutthroats inhabit this reservoir and provide an interesting mix in fishing. Average fish are less than 15”, but occasionally fish of over 20” may be encountered. The best part of this lake for fly fishing is often around the mouths of tributary streams although near the dam can also be very productive. If this lake has a downside, it is that the Columbia Gorge wind can blow very strongly here.

Today’s location: The Brice Creek Trail, about 25 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, traverses a scenic, rocky canyon with numerous small waterfalls and pools along Brice creek. It is a popular place to spend a summer afternoon, as well as suitable for hiking during a pleasant fall, mild winter and warm spring days. The old-growth forests, streamside trail and a few short open segments along cliffs provide a variety of environments to explore.

Today’s location: Saddle Mountain State Natural Area, east of Seaside on Highway 26, is cherished for its hiking trails, wildflowers and breathtaking scenery.  A small, seasonal campground, day-use picnic area, a two and a half mile trail to the summit and a short .16 mile side trail are the humble offerings at Saddle Mountain.  While it may not seem like much, be prepared to marvel at the sheer volume and quality of natural beauty packed into this park.
